u16/u18 2018 - What to expect update
Conditioning training will begin in January with sessions once per week. U16 will have this conditioning as part of its program, U18 will be voluntary (but highly recommended) until they hold their evaluations.
U18 evaluations will be Feb 20, 21, & 22 (with a possible fourth session the following week). Location is at the LU hangar, with times TBA (evenings). U16 will be holding full equipment practices during the Feb 20 – 22 block.
In March, in addition to the conditioning, the coaches may decide to hold dry-land training sessions (at a school gymnasium, TBD).
Full equipment practices start in April at the Hangar (sooner if we can secure times).
April 13-15, teams will travel to Winnipeg to compete in the Phase 1 Football Manitoba evaluations.
In the past, we have not participated in this event and Team Manitoba was “pre-chosen” before our players had a chance to be seen. We are excited that we can compete on the same level as the players from Manitoba.
Practices continue at the hangar and move outdoors when the weather permits in early May.
May 18-21 (Long Weekend) approximately 90 players from both the U16 and the U18 Phase 1 competition are invited back for Phase 2. The players will practice together, then be divided into two teams (Blue and Gold), practice as teams, and play a game on the final day. How many of our players that are chosen to participate will be determined by their display of skill, effort and attitude at Phase 1, we believe that our players will have a great showing!!
From the Phase 2 weekend, approximately 40 players will be invited to play for team Manitoba, with another (up to) 10 invited to participate as alternates. Acceptance to this team will involve travel to Winnipeg for practices and travel to western Canada for the Canada Cup (in June).
June 9 or 10 (TBD) Players who are not invited to play with team Manitoba will be eligible to play in the Winnipeg versus Northern Ontario game. For 2018, Football Manitoba has agreed that these games will be held in Thunder Bay. Watch for more details, as we would want this to be a major event. We will be looking for one-day volunteers and will be encouraging football players and fans from all age groups to come out & cheer on our teams.
